Health and safety considerations
Think the unthinkable.
The tragedy of a child injured by a fallen piano.
The tragedy of a career cut short by an injury at work.
Tragedies easily avoided by simple measures that ensure a piano cannot topple over or fall whilst being moved.
An employer has certain obligations to its employees by law and a duty of care to the members of any institution they manage. The employer must take appropriate steps to reduce risk as stated in the government legislation and the Health and safety executive guidelines.
Safety equipment for pianos
Safety
Upright pianos are very unstable.
The considerable weight of an upright piano is disproportionate with much of it high up and towards the back of the instrument.
If moved without due care, an upright piano can be accident waiting to happen.
The risks can be reduced significantly by fitting safety brackets or rear toe kits.
These products have been tried and tested and the design has been around for many years.
They are essential for pianos in schools and public places.
Fit any upright piano
The Safety Brackets are fitted to modern “slimline” pianos.
They are extendable so they are a universal fit and dished to retain the pianos original height.
Stability is increased because the rear castors sit outboard at the rear of the piano.
The castors have twin soft compound wheels. The brackets come finished in brown or black.
The “Rear Toe Kit” is designed for traditional upright pianos and includes a pair of castors for the front “toes”.
The back of the piano is fitted with robust steel brackets, each fitted with a twin wheel castor made of grey thermoplastic non-marking rubber.
Grand pianos
Grand pianos in schools and other public venues also require modification as they are potentially hazardous.
The legs of a grand piano are so easily damaged.
This is especially true when being moved.
In addition the traditional castors fitted can damage wooden floors.
Both of these problems can be addressed by fitting an A-Frame.
Care must be taken when moving a grand piano, even with an A frame, especially over surfaces that are uneven. The piano should be lifted over lumps and bumps of an uneven floor.
